Abel's Superhero Go-kart

Abel

“ Abel’s wish not only gave him something to look forward to throughout chemo, but it provided a way for his community to show their love and support. ”

In February of 2019, Abel completed a year of intravenous chemotherapy.  His tumor is now stable and showing no growth, and his IV port has been taken out; going forward, Abel’s tumor will be monitored by MRIs every twelve weeks to ensure that it remains stable.  “Going through that every week was really, really hard, but he’s so young, he takes everything in stride,” says Abel’s Mom, Lisa.  Because of his tumor and intensive treatments, Abel struggles with neuropathy and inhibited speech, and had to repeat a year of school.  After going through so much, this wish was just what Abel needed to give him the strength to get through the last month of treatment.  “He was so happy to have a day all about him,” his Mom remembers.

Abel loves superheroes and being active outside, whether he’s swimming in his pool, fishing, or just exploring, so when he sat down with his wish granters to think of the perfect wish, he decided on a superhero-themed go kart. On a winter day in Guilford, Make-A-Wish staff surprised Abel with his go kart at a school assembly, where his whole community, including members of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office and Guilford Fire Department, gathered to celebrate with him.  Abel’s wish surprise was filmed and aired on the local news, which Abel was very excited about.

Aside from the go kart, Abel’s favorite part of his wish was being the center of attention for a day, and having all of his friends, teachers, and neighbors rally around him.  Abel’s Mom says, “He just loved seeing himself on TV.  We had to keep rewinding it, he thought he was such a superstar...And he is.”  Abel will be moving on to the first grade in the fall and can’t wait to spend the summer riding his go kart around his neighborhood.  Abel’s wish not only gave him something to look forward to through-out chemo, but it provided a way for his community to show their love and support.  As Abel continues to fight cancer, his go kart will serve as necessary distraction from treatments and an escape from the difficult, scary parts of his journey.
