Words of Wishdom: A Blog

Creative Ways to Give Back

Folder for Wish Kids2
We are so fortunate at Make-A-Wish Maine to have the support of so many volunteers, donors and friends of our organization. People often find the perfect fit with our organization: whether it is the perfect way to give back through fundraisers, or the perfect volunteer job!

The very nature of our work is creative: we are granting the true wish of a child in Maine with a life-threatening medical condition. Along with that comes some flair for creativity! We always like to put a personal touch on the wish and make the experience better than their wildest imaginations. And, as you may know, kids have pretty amazing imaginations!

We are fortunate to have almost 200 active volunteers in the state and even more donors who give through individual donations or by fundraising events. Here are just a few creative ways people have gotten involved with Make-A-Wish Maine and some interesting ways to give back:

Travel Folders
We are so fortunate to have a talented volunteers creating these works of art for each of our wish kids going on a travel wish. These folders hold everything the family needs to be prepared for their wish, such as their travel itinerary. We have heard from numerous families that this folder becomes a keepsake they hold on to.

CLYNK!
A great new way to give back is by saving up returnables through CLYNK! Stop by the office (in the Time & Temperature Building in Portland) or email Rebecca and she will send you a starter kit. You'd be shocked to see how these returnables can add up to a lot of money going towards Maine wishes! This is a great idea for home, office or schools.

High School Fundraisers
High school students continually amaze me with the way they are able to support us, connect to the mission, and create a lasting difference on our organization. We have some great high school students who regularly contribute to Make-A-Wish Maine, such as Lanie Howes, who has raised enough money to grant many wishes for Maine, and Brooke Steele. Read more about Brooke (who has been named a 2014 Teen Who Cares from WCSH 6) and get ideas for how you can raise money for wishes in high school here!

As you can see, there are so many ways to get involved with Make-A-Wish Maine. I am astounded by the creativity of our donors and volunteers and by the number of people who get behind our mission. All of these gifts, of both time and money, go a long way towards creating a unique wish experience and furthering the impact of a wish
