As I write this, I have had the pleasure of being a part of Make-A-Wish for 24 wishes. I’ve been thinking of the impact of this fact and can’t help but think of the song “525,600 Minutes” from the musical Rent. If you aren’t a musical buff, the song basically talks about all the ways you can measure a year: In daylights, in sunsets, in midnights, in cups of coffee. In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife.
How about wishes?
I have witnessed 24 wishes. That is 24 children and families who have been positively impacted by the power of a wish. Twenty-four more kids filled with hope, strength and joy. What a great way to measure my 5 months here at Make-A-Wish Maine! Not to mention, their neighbors, friends, teachers, and doctors who have also been uplifted by seeing these kids have their wishes.
But today we celebrated something really remarkable – our Executive Director, Tom, just celebrated his 1,000th wish! (I, of course, baked cupcakes!)
Tom came on as the Executive Director right after its 100th wish, so as Make-A-Wish Maine is celebrating Wish #1,100, Tom is celebrating Wish #1,000! Imagine the impact he has had on the families in Maine. Ninety percent of the wishes from our chapter have been granted under Tom’s compassionate and knowledgeable leadership.
All of us in the office feel lucky to have Tom’s guidance here and as the newbie in the office, it is really been great to have someone who I can go to with a question who has seen it all before.
Congrats to Tom’s 1,000th wish here at Make-A-Wish Maine. If you are a volunteer, maybe you should start counting time based on your number of wishes, too!
