FALMOUTH, ME – June 27, 2013 - In an evening that combined the thrill of a Kentucky Derby Race and the magic of wishes, supporters of Make-A-Wish® Maine gathered two weeks ago at the Falmouth Country Club for the non-profit’s annual charity auction.

In total, the event netted $120,000, which is enough to grant 20 wishes to Maine children facing life-threatening medical conditions. Make-A-Wish Maine grants a wish to a Maine child every five days, on average, and the average cash cost of each wish is approximately $6,000.

Special guests included Mark Gentle, a wish Dad from Farmington who sang a song he wrote for his son Carter and Margaret Foster of Portland, a wish child who had her wish granted 18 years ago. The crowd of 250 people gave both a standing ovation for their additions to the special evening.

“We are grateful for support from these generous donors who see our mission as an important part of Maine’s community,” said Tom Peaco, Executive Director of Make-A-Wish Maine. “The impact a wish has is not limited to the wish child. The family’s joy in the Make-A-Wish experience can be felt in hearts of everyone who can imagine the challenges a family goes through when a child’s life is in threatened.”

Make-A-Wish Maine is grateful for support from auction sponsors: Handy Boat Services, VIP Parts, Tires and Service, RMS, Boothbay Harbor Country Club, Pape Subaru, Sea Bags, Textech Industries, Electricity Maine, Center Street Dental, Wells Fargo Advisors, PowerPay, Drummond & Drummond, J.S. McCarthy Printers, Woodin & Company Store Fixtures, Inc., Headlight, Dale Rand Printing, Perfect Sound, York County Supporters: Patten Grounds, Dr. Jeffrey Saltz, Bragdon Insurance, James Bartlett, Kittery Point Yacht Yard, and Mainely Grass. ABOUT MAKE-A-WISH®

Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. The Maine Chapter of Make-A-Wish opened in 1992. As of March 2013, we have granted over 1100 wishes. This coming year, the organization expects to grant the greatest wish of over 70 seriously ill Maine children, which is an average of one wish every five days. The average cost of a wish is $6,000. All money raised in Maine stays in Maine. Of the money donated, 77% goes towards program expenses (granting wishes), which is 12% more than the minimum required of non-profits by the Better Business Bureau. All wish expenses are fully covered by Make-A-Wish. Make-A-Wish Maine is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, and all contributions are tax deductible. The Maine chapter has over 200 volunteers statewide, and a staff of six. Our office is located at 477 Congress Street, Suite M1, in Portland.
