Jackson's Wish

Jackson

“ He got to be a kid and just a kid. No rules. No appointments. No meds. ”

- Jackson's Mom

When Jackson completed treatment, the family traveled to Turks and Caicos for a week of uninterrupted play time. His wish was inspired by the fun stories his parents told of their one-time trip to the Caribbean. Jackson wanted to enjoy a tropical vacation like that with his whole family. They enjoyed water parks, paddle boarding, and swimming with stingrays and catching up on lost time together.

Jackson battled Ewing’s Sarcoma, a form of childhood bone cancer most common in adolescent boys.  His mom, Annie, recalls, “it took us by  surprise that our active and seemingly healthy teen could have cancer.” During his rigorous treatment, Jackson remained positive and, “so strong,” Annie says.

While in treatment, Jackson’s bus driver reached out to a friend who volunteers at Make-A-Wish; before long Jackson and his family learned just how therapeutic a wish can be.  First was the fun of brainstorming his greatest wish.  Then was a surf-themed send-off party on the beach hosted by Liquid Dreams Surf Shop in York Beach. And finally, there was the wish!

What he enjoyed most: freedom. He got to be a kid and just a kid. No rules. No appointments. No meds. Just fun with his brothers! ”
